I grew up in a musical family. Mom and dad had a jazz trio with a piano player and my brothers and I would go on the road with them. Since there were tree of us, we started a band when we were really young. My older brother Paul played guitar and Kip, my younger brother who has had a bit of success in his time, played bass while I started my career on drums. We enlisted a neighborhood kid to be the second guitar and then we went and played gigs for keggers, parties, dances and everything in high school. I moved to LA in 1985 and found myself recording with major-label records, primarily doing background vocals. I had the opportunity to work with producers Beau Hill, Bob Ezrin and numerous others. I sang on records from KISS , Dweezil Zappa, Europe and Ratt to many newly signed bands in LA. I currently reside in Denver Colorado and am playing with Lords of Distortion, writing all original music with Mike Learn and Jeff Sekera. I look forward to many more years in this lucrative rock-and-roll business.
My name is Jeffrey Raymond Sekera. I was born and raised in Colorado. I am 47 years old and have been in the Denver area (and beyond) since I was sixteen. I have been in many bands throughout the years playing rock, heavy metal, glam rock, and southern rock, etc. Being a solid bass player, my influences range from Entwistle, John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, to Steve Harris and Geddy Lee, but my greatest idol has always been my father Ray, as he taught me most of what I know and helped build me as a musician and a man.
I have been in many bands over the years, some of the most credible outfits, and those that I took a lot of pride in are: Vandal (early 90s), an 80s rock, covers and original band, Boomslang (90s to 2002), a strong vocal classic rock band, and The Firewater Rock N Roll Medicine Show (15 + years). I currently play the Demon in a Kiss tribute, Kissm.
I have had the opportunity to play everywhere, from the big stage to the “hole in the wall“ pubs, always bringing my “A” game as a very energetic pro musician. I am proud to have been in the opening shows for several national acts including Jim Dandy Black Oak Arkansas, Little River Band, Mike Tramp, Jackyl, and Dokken.
I feel especially blessed to still be playing as I nearly lost the fingers on my left hand in a very bad table saw accident in 1998. I was able to fully recover and this perspective persists in a positive attitude. I like to use Ampeg amps and my main guitars are Ibanez although I have other favorites as well.
I met the men in Lords Of Distortion while we were all playing the local Denver music scene in 2013-14. In February of 2015 we were all in a personal situation that made it possible to start a new band. Mike Learn and Nate Winger, whom I admire dearly, had played together in a cover band for some time, and had a connection writing together as they rehearsed. I had just made myself available and messaged Mike at the right time. Thanks to technology I was sent some scratch tracks of some brilliant tunes, via e-mail, and the magic had begun.
We have been writing and doing some select shows for a few months now and the creativity has been a breath of fresh air as we have enough inspiring tunes to cut an album.
It is an honor and a privilege to play with Mike and Nate and be part of the Lords Of Distortion. The sky is the limit and even at my age I feel like a kid in a candy store. The ride has only just begun
I started playing when I was 12 years old; about the same time I started airbrushing. I had no idea at that time that I would live to be 50, much less still rocking on a guitar. I grew up in Northwestern PA, playing in bands since my high school days. The first band I was in was called The Rude Boys, We were a punk band, mostly due to our lack of expertise on our instruments. I attended Edinboro University where I pursued a degree in Commercial Graphics and Illustration. I left college my senior year to join a professional band out of Erie called Damien Steele. We went on to record a widely received self-titled album. The band broke up after several years of playing in the New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania bars and venues.
I moved to Arizona in 1992 and proceeded to follow my artistic side for a while, establishing myself as a professional airbrush artist. I have done album artwork for Megadeth, members of Primus, Trixter and numerous other hard rock and metal bands world wide. I have also been building guitars for myself throughout the years, initially due to my inability to afford a quality instrument and then as a professional luthier/artist. I currently build about 20 custom instruments a year from my studio in Lafayette, CO. Over the past decade and continuing on to the present, I work closely with Jackson/Charvel, D’Angelico, BC Rich and quite a few other major manufacturers, as an artist for their custom shops. I do a lot of paint work for the music industry and my client list is too long to just point out a few names.
I moved to Colorado in 2007 with my wife and daughter. As a musical outlet I joined a few cover bands and played the Denver music scene for several years. It was the first time I had played in a band that did not write original material and although I had a lot of fun, something was missing. I met Nate when I joined The Grind. We had an instant connection and we found ourselves getting together early for rehearsal and messing around writing our own material. As a very busy working band, The Grind was not really interested in adding original material to the set, so when the time was right, Nate and I left the band and began The Lords of Distortion in February of 2015. We were very fortunate that about the same time Jeff Sekera contacted me about joining up, and the rest is becoming history. His enthusiasm and confidence is what we needed to complete our 3 piece power trio.
I use Blades Custom Amplifiers exclusively with Learn Guitars.
Jeff joined the band this past year adding a ton of dimension to the band and vocals. A great singer/ songwriter really found his place in the band. I will let him add more.
Lords of Distortion focuses on writing songs that people want to sing, and hooks they can’t help but remember all while paying tribute to our roots in the hard rock and metal genre that has treated us so well in the past. You will find a bit of everything in what we do, and most certainly you will find a song that will connect with your mind and in your soul. Stay tuned for our debut album that is in the works right now. We have had interest from record labels around the country already, but have a focus on finishing the material we are currently writing. The time will come, soon, when we will let the world know…we are here.
